Bat Activity Analysis Plateform

Python | Pandas | Streamlit | Data validation | Reporting automation

Overview

Turn reviewed bat-survey data into clear, report-ready results.

Built for ecologists analysing static-detector surveys, this tool tackles a workflow I experienced in consultancy: repeatedly preparing data, adjusting analysis scripts and moving results into Word.

  • Bring inputs together: survey dates, detector details, weather and reviewed recording data.

  • Make checks visible: flag duplicates, invalid dates and records outside the analysis window.

  • Produce reusable outputs: activity summaries, charts and editable Word results.

The aim is to reduce repetitive preparation and make reporting more consistent, while leaving ecological interpretation with the ecologist.

Why I built it

In ecological consultancy, I regularly moved bat-survey data between spreadsheets, analysis scripts and Word reports. I built this tool to bring that repetitive preparation into one workflow, combining my ecology experience with developing Python skills.

What it does

  • Combines inputs: survey periods, detector details, overnight weather and reviewed activity records.

  • Checks the data: flags duplicates, invalid dates and out-of-window records while preserving source rows.

  • Produces reporting materials: contact totals, nightly activity statistics, charts, a detector map and editable Word results.

Species identification stays in specialist software.

How it works

Python and Pandas handle the data, with Streamlit providing the interface. Calculations account for overnight survey dates, time zones and clock changes. Activity summaries use individual nightly rates, retaining original and uncertain identifications.

Testing and limitations

The hosted workflow was checked with 1,000 synthetic contacts across three survey periods and 30 detector-nights. Exported species and detector totals matched the reference data, and all expected tables, charts and the map were present.

Version one assumes full operation during intended recording hours and complete uploaded records. Failures or missing data can understate activity. Weather is entered manually, and real BatExplorer export compatibility remains unverified.

This is a portfolio prototype producing factual reporting materials for ecological interpretation.
